First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the promise of a historical slice-of-life story. The idea of a proper, rule-abiding noble lady with hidden depths intrigued me. The setup, with the budding romance between Shen Yourong and the Emperor's younger brother, King Ji, felt like it had potential for both sweet moments and political intrigue.
What Works Well
The novel shines in its portrayal of the Shen family, particularly the relationships between the sisters. It's refreshing to see a Chinese historical novel where the female characters aren't constantly at each other's throats. The bond between them feels genuine, even with the occasional jealousy. I also appreciated the author's attempt to create realistic teenage characters who act their age, a welcome change from the often-overused trope of transmigrated adults in young bodies. The writing itself is beautiful, really drawing you into the FL's mind and feelings.
Areas of Concern
However, I did find some aspects of the novel less appealing. The romance between the leads felt a bit rushed and lacked depth. The age gap between the 14-year-old female lead and the 24-year-old male lead might make some readers uncomfortable. The male lead's initial manipulative behavior didn't sit well with me, although the author attempts to soften his image later on. I also felt that the ending was a bit abrupt and could have explored the male lead's ambitions more thoroughly.
