Description
There’s always this novel where the main gong is a wealthy Alpha, and the main shou is a poor Omega. For certain reasons, the shou disguises himself as an Alpha and enrolls in an elite all-Alpha boys’ high school, ending up as the gong’s roommate. From that moment, the gears of fate begin to turn. They circle each other, push and pull, testing the waters, never quite closing the distance– until they do. And then, there’s the cannon fodder roommate. Forced to watch as the two flirt, provoke, and probe each other day after day. Occasionally roped in as an unwilling wingman, sometimes even an accidental part of their “play”. But for the most part? Just a perfectly qualified piece of background decor. Unfortunately, Jiang Xu transmigrated into that very cannon fodder roommate. The turning point of the story happens when the main gong turns 18. Still unaware of the main shou’s true gender, he decides to come clean to his family. His family, unsurprisingly, doesn’t take it well. A poor same-gender lover? Absolutely not. They start throwing high-status, high-quality Omega candidates his way, hoping to “correct” his romantic inclinations. Frustrated beyond belief, the gong turns to his ever-reliable cannon fodder roommate. “Just do me a favor– help me get rid of one of them, and I’ll give you 100,000. How about it?” “…….” Jiang Xu took a quick look at his bank account, which was emptier than his soul. So, he agreed. Months later, after enduring a relentless emotional tug-of-war with the main shou, the main gong was utterly exhausted. Then, at a grand banquet, he unexpectedly ran into one of his former matchmaking candidates, Jin Jiayue, the sole Omega heir of the Jin family. Jin Jiayue was 28 this year, tall and strikingly handsome. A textbook domineering CEO type. But his overly assertive nature often made people joke that he didn’t act like an Omega at all. Add in his infamous bad temper, and he had successfully scared off every Alpha who had ever tried to pursue him. Rumor had it that he had never even been in a relationship. The main gong stared at Jin Jiayue’s stunning face in a daze, then pulled out his phone and dialed Jiang Xu’s number. “Jiang Xu, did you already get rid of that Jin Jiayue for me?!” “Yeah.” “How the hell did you do it?!” Jiang Xu was silent for a moment before replying, “I became his boyfriend.” Main gong: “……” Jin Jiayue despised blind dates and loathed being alone with those scheming Alphas. Yet, under his grandmother’s persistent pleas, he reluctantly agreed to meet a high school Alpha. He’d heard this Alpha was tall, handsome, and smooth-tongued. Someone with countless admirers but no history of ever getting close to an Omega. The first meeting was at a library. The Alpha, dressed in a white shirt and black pants, wore black-framed glasses and sat across from him, reading an entire book in silence. Jin Jiayue: “……” The second meeting was at a café. The Alpha ordered a glass of milk, then, as if no one else existed, pulled out a copy of Five Years of Gaokao, Three Years of Mock Exams. Jin Jiayue: “……” The third meeting was at a hot spring lodge on a mountainside. A lone Alpha and an unattached Omega, finally alone in one room. The Alpha leaned back on the couch and played on his phone. Jin Jiayue figured, “There’s no way he can keep up this act now.” He scooted closer to take a peek, only to see the screen displaying 94 words learned on a vocabulary app. Jin Jiayue: “……” Jin Jiayue was like an old house catching fire; once set ablaze, it burned uncontrollably. If he didn’t see his Alpha for even a second, he found himself thinking about him. So, he simply accepted the invitation from A City’s top Alpha high school to give a speech. While passing by the Hall of Honor beneath the administration building, his gaze inadvertently landed on a familiar face in a framed photo. Beneath it, the name and class were written clearly: Senior Year, Class A. Jiang Xu. Only then did Jin Jiayue realize that his Alpha, the one who had quietly wormed his way into his heart, was actually a top student who still had to run around working odd jobs just to make ends meet. A little bookworm who had no choice but to hustle for his own survival. Introduction: It turns out I am just a part of your play

My Thoughts on The Nerd Is Troubled
"The Nerd Is Troubled" promised a sweet romance, and for the most part, it delivered! I dove in expecting a lighthearted read and came out with a definite case of the warm fuzzies. While not without its flaws, the central relationship definitely carried the story for me.
First Impressions
The premise is simple: a "nerd" navigates the complexities of love, school life, and a hidden identity. Right off the bat, I was drawn to the dynamic between the main characters. It's a classic setup, but with enough unique twists to keep things interesting.
What Works Well
The heart of this novel lies in the central romance. The characters are genuinely sweet and watching their relationship blossom was incredibly satisfying. One aspect that really stood out was the character development, especially in the initially "simple-minded" MC. Seeing him evolve and become more proactive in the relationship was endearing. I also appreciated the story's tendency to subvert certain genre tropes, particularly regarding omega and alpha norms. The author is successful in creating a heartwarming story about first love, and I was invested in seeing the couple navigate their feelings for each other.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the romance, a few elements gave me pause. The age gap, although a common trope, did occasionally make me feel a bit uneasy. I can see how it might be a turn-off for some readers. Additionally, the portrayal of side characters as overly judgmental and focused on status felt a bit cartoonish at times. I also couldn't help but feel that the later reveal about the MC's rich background felt a little cliché and undermined his initial struggles. It would have been more powerful to see the story resolve without resorting to that trope. Another thing that I would have liked to have seen more development on was the MC's trouble ejaculating and perceiving pheromones.

Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "The Nerd Is Troubled" is a genuinely enjoyable read if you're looking for a sweet and heartwarming romance. The focus on character development and the leads' dynamic makes it easy to overlook some of the more questionable plot choices. If you're willing to embrace the cliché and focus on the central relationship, you'll likely find this novel a worthwhile escape.
