It's hard to root for a couple when one partner has consistently mistreated the other. The constant suffering of the female lead, while perhaps intended to elicit sympathy, ultimately felt excessive and even gratuitous. The ending, in particular, left a bad taste in my mouth, as it felt like the ML didn't do anything to make up for what he did.
