My Thoughts on The Malicious Member is Back!
"The Malicious Member is Back!" has definitely grabbed my attention in the crowded world of idol-centric web novels. With a solid 4.0/5 rating from a large number of readers, I dove in eager to see what all the fuss was about, and I wasn't disappointed.
First Impressions
From the get-go, I was drawn to the premise: an idol, infamous for his "malicious" behavior and spiraling alcoholism, gets a second chance to rewrite his past. The age regression trope is used effectively, throwing him back into the survival show that launched his career. It’s a compelling setup that immediately made me want to root for the main character (MC), Chunyong, as he navigates the cutthroat world of K-Pop with a newfound understanding of what truly matters.
What Works Well
What really shines in this novel is the MC's character development. He's not just magically fixed by his regression; he actively works to atone for his mistakes and rebuild his relationships. The author does a great job of portraying his trauma and the lingering effects of his past, which makes his growth feel earned and realistic. I found myself invested in his journey, especially his interactions with his teammates and his efforts to help them succeed. The side characters are also well-developed, each with their own distinct personalities and motivations. The dynamic between Chunyong and the system is also hilarious, with the system being snarky and teasing while still encouraging the MC.
Areas of Concern
While I thoroughly enjoyed the novel, I can see a few areas that might not appeal to all readers. Some felt the back-and-forth between past memories and the present timeline disrupted the flow of the story. Others found the story lost some of its luster after the survival show arc concluded. I can understand this, as the initial premise is incredibly strong, and maintaining that momentum throughout a longer narrative can be challenging. Also, some felt that the novel didn't explore Chunyong's alcoholism and addiction problems in a meaningful way.

Final Verdict
Overall, "The Malicious Member is Back!" is a heartwarming and entertaining read that I would recommend to anyone looking for an idol novel with depth and character growth. Despite some minor pacing issues and unexplored themes, the compelling protagonist, well-developed side characters, and engaging plot make it a worthwhile investment of your time. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing where the story goes next!
