My Thoughts on Assistant Manager Kim Hates Idols
"Assistant Manager Kim Hates Idols" is a wild ride, to say the least. I went in expecting a lighthearted comedy and while there are definitely laugh-out-loud moments, I quickly realized there's a lot more depth and complexity to this story than I initially anticipated. It's a blend of genres that somehow works, mixing slice of life with drama, a touch of fantasy, and even some psychological elements.
First Impressions
The premise itself is intriguing: an overworked office worker gets a second chance at life, but with the caveat that he has to debut as an idol in the very group he was forced to "stan" in his previous life. The initial chapters are hilarious as we see Kim Iwol, our MC, navigate the idol world with his corporate skillset and a healthy dose of cynicism.
What Works Well
What really hooked me was the character writing, particularly Kim Iwol himself. He's eccentric, funny, and deeply flawed. Many readers praise his humor and the ways his past trauma affects his present actions. He's an unreliable narrator, which adds another layer to the story. He's constantly downplaying his own abilities and overworking himself, a result of his abusive past. The other members of Spark are also well-developed and their found-family dynamic with Iwol is heartwarming. The author does a great job of making each member feel like an individual with their own struggles and personalities.
I also appreciated the unique system in the story. It's not a typical "golden finger" system, but rather a demanding and somewhat cryptic entity that adds to the overall intrigue.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the office anecdotes early on, I can see how they might become repetitive for some readers as the story progresses. One point of contention that I noticed is the system's "rewards" can feel delayed and anticlimactic, which can detract from the emotional payoff.

Final Verdict
Despite some minor flaws, "Assistant Manager Kim Hates Idols" is a highly engaging and surprisingly emotional novel. The well-developed characters, unique premise, and exploration of trauma make it stand out from other idol stories. I wholeheartedly recommend giving it a try. Just be prepared for a rollercoaster of emotions!
