"The Little Bedmaid Just Wants To Get By" pulled me in with its promise of a historical romance set in ancient China. The premise of a little bedmaid and her interactions with someone of higher status definitely piqued my interest, and the "carefree protagonist" tag gave me hope for a lighthearted read. But, as I delved deeper, my initial optimism started to waver.
What Works Well
The novel shines when it focuses on the world-building and the depiction of ancient Chinese society. The details surrounding the different social statuses and the power dynamics at play are well-crafted. I also appreciated the "childhood friends" and "childhood love" aspects, which added a layer of sweetness to the initial chapters. The female lead, despite some criticisms, is generally portrayed as beautiful and, at times, endearing. This contributed to my desire to see her succeed, even when the plot took turns I wasn't too fond of.
Areas of Concern
While the "wife chasing crematorium" trope can be enjoyable for some, I found the execution in this story to be frustrating. The male lead's behavior is a major sticking point. His arrogance and the way he treats the female lead, particularly early on, made it difficult for me to root for their relationship. The power imbalance is glaring, and his actions often felt more like exploitation than genuine affection. I felt like I was waiting for him to have some kind of monumental change that never seemed to arrive. This negatively impacted my overall enjoyment of the story. The female lead's naivete, while perhaps fitting for her role, also tested my patience at times.

If you're a die-hard fan of this specific trope and can tolerate a significant power imbalance in the romance, you might find something to enjoy here. However, for me, the negatives outweighed the positives, leaving me with a feeling of disappointment.
