Description
“Old Tang, you activated speed-related Genetic Base Points. What’s the direction of those Base Points?” This question caused Tang Ting to have a melancholic expression. “It’s… Hand speed…” “And the right hand at that!” Xu Tui slipped onto a daze. Hand speed and the right hand. This image… Didn’t the teacher say that it was easier to activate the Base Points of the areas you use the most? “Old Tang, just what do you use your hands for?” “According to that explanation, did I activate the Genetic Base Points in my stomach because I’ve eaten 18 year’s worth of meals?” Cheng Mo, who was on his way to becoming a glutton, looked up and sighed. Xu Tui stroked his head, “Could it be because I’ve used my brain for 18 years?”

My Thoughts on The Great Genetic Era
"The Great Genetic Era" promised a unique blend of sci-fi and fantasy, and while it delivered on some fronts, it stumbled in others. I went in expecting a thrilling ride through a genetically enhanced future, and what I got was a mixed bag that left me feeling conflicted.
First Impressions
Initially, I was hooked. The premise of a world where humans unlock superpowers through genetic modification is genuinely interesting. The early chapters do a solid job of world-building, introducing us to a capable protagonist and a compelling supporting cast. The conflicts, both internal and external, seemed well-defined, setting the stage for a grand adventure. I was eager to see where the story would go.
What Works Well
The unique power system is definitely a strong point. The author clearly put effort into crafting a distinct system, moving away from tired tropes and clichés. I appreciated the attempt to ground the fantastical elements in a somewhat scientific framework, even if it occasionally felt a bit clunky. The ruthless nature of the main character also added an interesting edge. He's not afraid to make difficult decisions, which makes for some engaging moments.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, the novel suffers from some significant issues. The pacing slows to a crawl after the initial arc, with the protagonist spending an excessive amount of time in what feels like a "magic school" setting. The overarching plot seems to vanish, replaced by a series of repetitive training sequences and inconsequential encounters. I also have to address the issues of racism and nationalism. While some might argue that these elements are simply reflections of the world-building, I found them to be heavy-handed and distracting, detracting from my enjoyment of the story.

Final Verdict
"The Great Genetic Era" has potential, but it's ultimately a flawed novel. The unique power system and ruthless protagonist are definite positives, but the pacing issues and problematic themes hold it back. If you're willing to overlook these flaws, there might be something here for you, but proceed with caution. I'm giving it a tentative 3 out of 5 stars.
