Description

Instead of building a dungeon to feed on the despair of humans, the eccentric Procell used his [Creation] powers to build a city where humans and monsters could live and laugh together. Before long, he became one of the three strongest Demon Lords. However, through a series of events, a jealous fellow Demon Lord sent Procell away to an unknown land. And so, in order to return to the city he built as well as to his beloved monsters, Procell and the [Infinitely Evolving Slime] he came with began to move. The Great Demon Lord’s City Development ~The Ideal City Built with Magic, Science, and Monsters~ Review & Spoilers - Novel Translator

My Thoughts on The Great Demon Lord’s City Development The Ideal City Built with Magic, Science, and Monsters

This web novel, a sequel to a previously well-received story, has left me with mixed feelings. While it carries over some of the charm and world-building potential of its predecessor, certain aspects definitely gave me pause. It’s a bit of a rollercoaster, with moments of genuine enjoyment followed by some significant concerns.

First Impressions

The initial setup is intriguing. We find our Demon Lord transported to another world, a classic isekai trope, but with the added layer of him already being an established character. The first few chapters introduce new characters and a fresh setting, promising a continuation of the kingdom-building themes from the previous novel. The hint of events that occurred between the prequel and this story also piqued my interest, leaving me eager to see how the author would weave those threads in.

What Works Well

The core concept of blending magic, science, and monster integration within a city-building context remains appealing. There's a certain satisfaction in watching a protagonist use their knowledge and abilities to create a thriving society, and this novel seemed poised to deliver on that front, at least initially. The hints of a larger narrative and the potential for exploring the events that led to the Demon Lord's transportation also held promise.

Areas of Concern

Unfortunately, my enthusiasm waned as the story progressed. A major sticking point for me was the handling of certain sensitive themes. The abrupt shift in character and the inclusion of disturbing content felt unnecessary and detracted significantly from the overall experience. The ending also felt rushed and incomplete, leaving me with the impression that the story was cut short before it could truly realize its potential.

Final Verdict

"The Great Demon Lord’s City Development" is a flawed sequel. While it retains some of the world-building potential of its predecessor, it's ultimately weighed down by questionable plot choices and a rushed ending. If you're a fan of the first novel, proceed with caution, and be prepared for a potentially jarring shift in tone and content.
