My Thoughts on The General
"The General" promised a dramatic historical romance steeped in ancient China, and while it delivered on some fronts, I found myself ultimately wanting a bit more depth. The premise itself is intriguing, and the short story format kept me engaged, but the execution felt a little uneven in places.
First Impressions
I was immediately drawn in by the setting and the promise of a relationship between a general and a younger love interest. The "calm protagonist" tag also appealed to me, as I enjoy stories where characters navigate complex situations with a level head. The initial chapters painted a vivid picture of the world and introduced characters that seemed to have potential for interesting development.
What Works Well
The world-building, though not incredibly detailed, was sufficient to create a believable backdrop for the drama. I appreciated the focus on court intrigue and the glimpses into the lives of various characters, even those who weren't central to the main romance. The seventh prince's character arc, in particular, felt well-developed and satisfying. I also enjoyed the dynamic between the bodyguard and the general, and the "protagonist falls in love first" trope is always a winner in my book.
Areas of Concern
My main reservation stems from the somewhat underdeveloped relationship between the main characters. I felt like the story spent too much time focusing on external events and the problems of secondary characters, leaving the central romance feeling a little rushed and superficial. I wanted to see more direct interaction and emotional development between the general and his love interest.

Final Verdict
Overall, "The General" is an enjoyable read with a lot of potential. The setting, the political intrigue, and some of the secondary characters are well-developed and engaging. However, the central romance could have benefited from more focus and depth. While I appreciate the short story format, I believe that exploring the relationship between the main characters in more detail would have elevated the story to a new level. I'd give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars.
