My Thoughts on The Final Protectors
"The Final Protectors" is a completed novel from Priest that piqued my interest with its blend of fantasy, shounen ai, and supernatural elements set in a modern world with a time travel twist. After diving in and considering different perspectives, here's what I think.
First Impressions
The initial chapters definitely grabbed my attention. The premise of characters traveling a thousand years into the future to address a weakening barrier protecting humanity from demons is immediately compelling. The mystery surrounding their past lives and the legends associated with them creates a strong hook. I was eager to learn more about the world and the characters' roles in it.
What Works Well
One of the strongest aspects of "The Final Protectors" appears to be its worldbuilding. The magic system and action sequences are well-developed and intriguing. The author’s humor also shines through, adding a light touch to the serious subject matter. I particularly enjoyed the dynamic between the main characters, described as childhood friends turned estranged lovers working to rekindle their connection. The setup involving the events that led to their separation and the significance of the knife creates a compelling emotional arc. The plot involving the Archbishop waking up after a millennium is masterfully written.
Areas of Concern
While the worldbuilding and plot intrigued me, I have to address some concerns. Several readers have pointed out issues with transphobia in the novel, specifically regarding the portrayal of a transgender woman. The misgendering and the reduction of her gender identity to a joke are valid criticisms that significantly detract from the overall experience. This is a serious issue that needs to be acknowledged.

Final Verdict
"The Final Protectors" presents a captivating fantasy world with engaging characters and a compelling plot. However, the problematic representation of a transgender character casts a shadow over the positive aspects of the novel. While the worldbuilding, humor, and central relationship offer enjoyable elements, potential readers should be aware of the transphobic content and consider whether they are comfortable engaging with it. I am left with mixed feelings, acknowledging the novel's strengths while remaining critical of its flaws.
