First Impressions
The premise is undeniably gripping: a protagonist reborn with the sole purpose of vengeance against the sister who ruined her life. The initial chapters set a fast pace, and I was immediately drawn into the heroine's ruthless determination. The comedic undertones definitely helped to balance the darker themes of abuse and revenge, making it a surprisingly lighthearted experience despite the heavy subject matter.
What Works Well
The pacing is definitely a strong point. The story moves along swiftly, and I never felt bogged down by unnecessary details. I also appreciated the refreshing take on the main couple. They're not the typical cool and sophisticated leads you often see in historical romances. Their goofy interactions and relatable embarrassments added a layer of charm and made them feel more human. The author also deserves credit for resolving many of the initial conflicts relatively early on, preventing the plot from dragging. The mystery surrounding Concubine Ye was particularly well-handled, with a satisfying reveal that didn't leave me hanging. The fact that the MC never seemed to struggle with money was a unique and welcome change from the norm.
Areas of Concern
While the story is entertaining, it does have its flaws. The romance, while cute, relies heavily on the "love at first sight" trope, which felt a bit unrealistic. I also found the male lead's initial disregard for the female lead's reputation problematic. His actions, while intended to help her, could have easily backfired and caused her significant harm. The second brother, despite being a key figure in the female lead's past, felt underdeveloped and lacked meaningful interaction with her after his return.
