Alright, buckle up, because this novel was quite the ride! I went in expecting a fluffy, feel-good story about a guy adopting some cute critters, and while there's definitely a good dose of heartwarming moments, it ended up being so much more complex than I anticipated.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the premise: a weapons designer transmigrating to a sci-fi world and becoming a dad to a bunch of abandoned "cubs." The early chapters were definitely sweet, focusing on the MC's caring nature and his resourcefulness in providing for his new family. I quickly grew attached to the cubs and the quirky robot, 09.
What Works Well
The world-building is surprisingly well-developed, with political struggles and fractional divisions adding depth to the narrative. I particularly enjoyed the MC's character; he's intelligent, capable, and not overly arrogant. He's a "dad" through and through, and his dedication to his cubs is genuinely touching. The cubs themselves are charming and each has a compelling, complex backstory. I found myself invested in their growth and development. The ML is also a refreshing change from the typical cold, overbearing type. He's sweet, a bit shy, and his interactions with the MC are often amusing.
Areas of Concern
I did have a few minor gripes. The pacing felt a bit rushed at times, and some of the technical details, especially regarding mecha and technology, could have been fleshed out more. Also, I felt that the "consciousness of the universe" explanation felt a bit like a convenient plot device.
