My Thoughts on Tender
"Tender" promised a sweet slice-of-life romance with character growth, and for the most part, it delivered. I found myself drawn into the story of Huo Yan, a young woman navigating college and her relationship with a devoted, though perhaps subtly manipulative, love interest. The journey of self-discovery was the real highlight for me.
First Impressions
Initially, I was intrigued by the synopsis and the promise of a naive protagonist blossoming into a confident young woman. The "black belly" tag on the male lead also piqued my interest, hinting at some interesting dynamics. Diving in, I quickly became invested in Huo Yan's story and her struggle to step out of her sister's shadow.
What Works Well
The character development, especially Huo Yan's, is a definite strong point. Watching her grow from a timid girl into someone who understands her own worth was genuinely satisfying. The romance, while perhaps a bit unbalanced in terms of the power dynamic, was undeniably sweet. I also appreciated the slice-of-life elements, which made the story feel grounded and relatable. I was glad that the ML also had some issues to deal with, making him a more rounded character. The interactions between the characters felt genuine, and I found myself rooting for the main couple.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the overall story, I do have a few minor reservations. The family dynamics, particularly Huo Yan's relationship with her parents, felt somewhat glossed over. Their initial treatment of her was quite harsh, and the resolution felt a little too convenient and not fully explored. Also, some side characters seemed to fade into the background after their initial purpose was served. While I understand that this reflects real life, it did leave me wanting a bit more closure for some of them.
