"Tang is my Obsession" is a web novel that left me with a serious case of mixed feelings. It's a sugary sweet romance with a surprising twist, but it also has some significant flaws that kept me from completely falling in love with it. While I enjoyed certain aspects, I definitely think potential readers should go in with their eyes wide open.
First Impressions
Going into this, I was expecting a possessive, perhaps even slightly unhinged male lead, given the title. What I found was… not that at all. Instead, I was presented with a story that felt more like a doting father-daughter relationship than a romance between equals, at least in the beginning. It definitely wasn’t what I anticipated.
What Works Well
The biggest strength of "Tang is my Obsession" is undoubtedly the male lead, Shi Chengyu. He's a breath of fresh air in a genre often plagued by toxic masculinity. He's kind, supportive, and genuinely devoted to Shen Chutang, the female lead. He respects her boundaries, spoils her without being controlling, and isn't afraid to show his emotions. In a world of overbearing CEOs, Shi Chengyu is a genuinely good guy, and that's incredibly appealing. I found myself rooting for him constantly. The devotion and care he has for the female lead is the main appeal of the novel, and the only reason to read it.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, the female lead, Shen Chutang, is where things get a bit shaky. She's portrayed as emotionally weak and overly dependent on Shi Chengyu. Her childish behavior, even at 23, can be frustrating. While she's not a bad person, her lack of emotional maturity makes it difficult to see her as a true partner for Shi Chengyu. The pacing is also an issue. The first half felt slow and uneventful, focusing on the day-to-day life of a pampered princess. Then, suddenly, a major tragedy occurs, shifting the story into high gear. However, the ending feels rushed, leaving me wanting more emotional depth and resolution.
