"Steel Shell System" plunges you into a world overrun by zombies, mutated creatures, and a protagonist grappling with a newly acquired system. It's a blend of action, adventure, and the supernatural, seasoned with a dash of tragedy and harem elements. While the premise is familiar, the execution is where the novel either shines or falters, and I found myself having mixed feelings.
First Impressions
The initial chapters throw you right into the thick of the apocalypse. The protagonist, an otaku suddenly thrust into a life-or-death scenario, immediately gains a system to help him survive. It's a fast-paced start, but it also feels a little rushed. The introduction of the system, while central to the story, felt somewhat generic, ticking boxes rather than genuinely enhancing the narrative.
What Works Well
I appreciate the author's attempt to sidestep some common zombie apocalypse tropes. For example, the protagonist's parents living near a police station eliminates the predictable "must save my family" plotline, which is a refreshing change. The system itself provides a framework for progression, allowing the protagonist to grow stronger and adapt to the increasingly dangerous world. The evolution of zombies and the introduction of mutated creatures add layers of complexity to the challenges he faces.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, some aspects held the story back. The protagonist's intelligence stat feels incongruent with his actions. He makes decisions that seem questionable, even for someone in a high-stress situation, which detracts from the immersion. His crafting choices, like using tape and cloth to attach a knife to a mop handle instead of simply sharpening the mop, felt unnecessarily convoluted. Also, the initial translation quality may be a barrier to entry for some readers.
