"Starting With Contract Pets" had potential, but ultimately left me feeling a bit underwhelmed. The premise – a transmigration to a world of magical pets – is enticing, and there are elements I enjoyed, but several issues held it back from being a truly great read.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the familiar "monster-raising" concept, reminiscent of Pokemon. The idea of a protagonist with a unique ability to identify powerful pets is always appealing. However, the transmigration aspect felt tacked on and ultimately unnecessary. It didn't really add anything to the story or the MC's development. He adapts far too quickly, and the "fish out of water" element is entirely absent.
What Works Well
The pet development is definitely a highlight. I enjoyed seeing the pets evolve and grow stronger, and the descriptions of their behaviors and personalities were engaging. The system the MC uses is also well-done and not overly intrusive, a definite plus. The MC's dedication to his pets is heartwarming, and this aspect of the story is genuinely enjoyable. I also appreciated the relatively loyal romance, with the MC staying dedicated to his wife. For some, the balance of allies and enemies was well-executed, avoiding the common trope of constant, senseless provocation.

One of my biggest issues was the lack of world-building. The setting felt generic and underdeveloped. This lack of depth made it difficult to become fully invested in the story. Additionally, the MC's characterization felt inconsistent at times. He's supposedly a mature adult in a teenager's body, but his actions often felt childish. The conflicts also lacked tension, making the overall narrative feel somewhat bland. The writing quality, while fast-paced, could use some improvement to create a more vivid and immersive experience.
