My Thoughts on Shen Mu
"Shen Mu" is a novel that seems to have sparked quite a bit of debate among its readers, and after diving into what others have experienced, I can see why. This xuanhuan story, with its mix of action, fantasy, and seinen elements, promises a grand adventure, but the execution appears to be a mixed bag.
First Impressions
The initial draw for many seems to be the premise of an ancient protagonist waking up after a long period of cryosleep. I can understand the allure – the idea of a character navigating a changed world with the wisdom (or perhaps the rustiness) of ages is always intriguing. However, it seems that initial intrigue quickly fades for some, replaced by frustration.
What Works Well
A few readers have highlighted the slow-burn nature of the story as a positive. The focus on character interplay and backstory, rather than constant action, appeals to those who appreciate a more deliberate pace. Some even felt the main character's imperfections made him relatable, a refreshing change from the often-overpowered protagonists in similar genres. The blending of Eastern and Western fantasy elements is also an interesting concept that I think has potential, assuming it's executed well. I also noticed some readers claimed the story gets much better after the first 100 chapters.
Areas of Concern
The biggest sticking point, from what I've gathered, is the main character's perceived weakness and naivete. Several readers expressed frustration with the MC's tendency to be manipulated, particularly by a specific female character. This dynamic, described as bordering on abusive, seems to be a major turn-off for many. I also saw some criticism of the female characters in general, describing them as either unlikeable or as contributing little to the overall plot.

Final Verdict
"Shen Mu" seems to be a novel that demands patience and a tolerance for flawed characters. While some appreciate the slow build and focus on relationships, others find the protagonist's perceived weakness and the questionable dynamics between characters to be deal-breakers. It seems like a "love it or hate it" kind of story. If you're looking for a power fantasy with a flawless MC, this probably isn't it. However, if you're willing to invest the time and can appreciate a flawed protagonist in a complex world, "Shen Mu" might be worth a try. Just be prepared for a potentially frustrating journey.
