Description
In the imperial garden of jade tiles and red walls, the flowers have bloomed. A childish girl shyly confessed, “Jingxuan gege, I like you.” Jingxuan indifferently retorted, “But I don’t like you!” Years later, when they met again, the immature girl has become an elegant lady. He said to her affectionately this time, “Your husband will only be me, and I will not fail again.” She stared at him with tears in her eyes and said, “You should have understood that I have already lost the courage to love you.” Her affection had been so deep, yet he missed it in full bloom. Now that he’s persistent, she has already grown cold. One step forward, two steps back. They are two people who never meet in between— they always miss each other.

My Thoughts on Shattered Glass
"Shattered Glass" is a web novel that definitely left an impression on me. It's a poignant tale of love, loss, and the cruelties of fate set in ancient times. I went in expecting a tragedy, and it delivered that in spades. If you're looking for a lighthearted read, this isn't it. But if you're prepared to shed some tears and grapple with complex emotions, "Shattered Glass" might be right up your alley.
First Impressions
I was immediately drawn in by the female lead, Mei Li. Her journey from a hopeful young woman to someone marked by hardship is truly heartbreaking. The story throws you right into the thick of things, and I quickly became invested in her fate. I will say the story can feel a bit incomplete at times due to its heavy reliance on Mei Li's perspective. However, I found this made the story more endearing and her character more human.
What Works Well
The character development, especially for Mei Li, is a standout. I was able to empathize with her choices, even when they were difficult to watch. The author does a great job of portraying her evolution from a naive girl chasing after love to a resilient woman prioritizing her child's well-being.
I also appreciated the bittersweet nature of the ending. It felt fitting for the story, even if it wasn't what I necessarily wanted. It was a perfect tragedy, which I really enjoyed.
Areas of Concern
The male lead, Jingxuan, is definitely a problematic character. While some readers might find his eventual character growth compelling, I found it hard to fully forgive his earlier actions. He is a Grade A as*hole. His initial cruelty and selfishness set the stage for much of the tragedy that unfolds, and it can be frustrating to watch.

Final Verdict
Despite its potentially triggering content and morally gray characters, I would recommend "Shattered Glass" to readers who enjoy angsty, tragic stories. It's a well-written and emotionally resonant novel that explores the complexities of love, loss, and societal constraints. Just be prepared for a heavy dose of heartbreak. I'm giving it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
