I jumped in expecting a lighthearted read, and that's precisely what I got.
What Works Well
One of the strongest aspects of this novel is its focus on the dynamic between the two main characters, Lin Jing and Ji XingLing. The story shines in its slice-of-life moments, creating a charming and engaging narrative. I particularly enjoyed Lin Jing's snarky attitude; it adds a layer of humor that really makes the story pop. Ji XingLing, on the other hand, is just plain adorable, and their interactions are consistently entertaining. I also appreciate the lack of heavy angst. Sometimes you just need a fluffy, feel-good story, and Shanhai High School delivers on that front. The supernatural elements are there, but they don't overwhelm the plot, allowing the character relationships to take center stage.

The introduction of the supernatural elements could have been handled a little smoother. I felt like I was thrown into the deep end without much preparation. The question of who is the dominant one in the relationship is also a bit unclear, but that ambiguity can be part of the fun, I guess.
