"School Uniform Gentleman" promised a blend of comedy, romance, and school life with a slightly darker edge, and for the most part, it delivered an engaging, if sometimes uncomfortable, reading experience. First Impressions
The initial hook is strong: a seemingly well-mannered student, Yu Rui, constantly being harassed (or perhaps flirted with?) by the "shameless thug" Xie Li. I was immediately curious to see how this dynamic would play out. The push and pull between these two very different personalities is definitely the driving force of the story, and I was eager to see them develop.
What Works Well
The characters themselves are compelling. Yu Rui, despite his outward calm, harbors a colder interior, shaped by his past. Xie Li is definitely a controversial character, with some readers finding his behavior toxic, but others found his brand of "yandere" affection thrilling. I found the author did a decent job of writing the tension between the two, even if sometimes it felt a bit repetitive. The novel is generally low on heavy drama, focusing instead on the evolving relationship between the leads, which I appreciated.
