"Sassy Princess Is a Doctor" presents an interesting premise: a modern-day genius doctor transmigrates into the body of an "ugly" ancient princess. While the concept has potential, my experience with the novel has been somewhat mixed.
First Impressions
Initially, I found the setup intriguing. The idea of a skilled doctor navigating the complexities of ancient court life is appealing. However, the early chapters felt a bit rushed. The introduction of the MC's abilities and her "space" felt a little too convenient and lacked the necessary build-up to feel truly immersive.
What Works Well
The pacing does seem to improve as the story progresses. The interactions between the MC and the other characters, especially her husband, Prince Jin, and his brother, the reagent prince, become more engaging. I enjoyed the dynamic of how the MC's changing personality starts to pique the interest of those around her. The "ugly to beautiful" transformation aspect is a classic trope, and it’s executed reasonably well here, drawing me in to see how she wins over the other characters. The translations are also well-done, making the story easy to follow.
Areas of Concern
One area that I feel needs improvement is the character interactions. At times, the dialogue felt a little awkward and unnatural, hindering my ability to fully connect with the characters and their relationships. The initial portrayal of the MC as "OP from the start" also detracted from the sense of her having to overcome challenges. A bit more vulnerability and struggle early on would have made her journey more compelling. Also, the initial writing style felt a bit immature, which made it harder to get invested in the story.
