My Thoughts on Requiem of Subdued Souls
"Requiem of Subdued Souls" is a novel that truly surprised me. Jumping in, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I quickly found myself drawn into its unique blend of supernatural mystery and historical Korean setting. It's not your typical isekai story, which is a definite plus in my book. The premise is simple yet effective: Seol Yeong, our protagonist, solves supernatural mysteries to clear his name, all while an overarching mystery simmers in the background.
First Impressions
Initially, the writing style took a bit of getting used to. It can be a little confusing at times, especially when trying to figure out who's speaking. However, once I adjusted, I found the story incredibly engaging. The author throws you right into the world, and you learn as you go, which adds to the immersive experience. I also started reading the manhwa adaptation and found it a great way to visualize the characters.
What Works Well
The characters are undoubtedly a highlight. Seol Yeong's straightforward nature is refreshing, and his interactions with the mysterious yet mischievous Zaha are a joy to read. Their dynamic is a slow burn, evolving from initial distrust to a deep, almost soulmate-like connection. Even though it's not explicitly BL, the bond between them is undeniable and incredibly impactful. I also appreciated the episodic nature of the story, with each arc presenting a new ghost story to solve, all contributing to the larger narrative. The blend of supernatural elements with the historical backdrop of the Silla kingdom is expertly done, creating a rich and immersive world.
Areas of Concern
The translation quality can be a bit inconsistent, especially in the later chapters. There were moments where I felt like I was wading through barely-edited MTL, which detracted from the reading experience. Additionally, the lack of exposition on some of the more esoteric terminology and historical nuances can make it difficult to fully grasp the intricacies of the ghost stories.

Final Verdict
Despite some flaws in the translation and a potentially divisive ending, "Requiem of Subdued Souls" is a novel that has truly captured my heart. The engaging story, well-developed characters, and unique blend of genres make it a worthwhile read. If you're looking for a supernatural mystery with a strong emotional core and don't mind a bit of ambiguity, I highly recommend giving this one a try. Just be prepared to shed a few tears.
