"Pretty Stepmother’s Reaction to the Barrage [70’s]" had me intrigued from the start. The premise of a woman navigating 1970s life with a "barrage system" – essentially a running commentary from future viewers – is certainly unique. Add in elements of reincarnation and a military romance, and you have a recipe for what could be a really engaging story. While I enjoyed parts of it, some aspects definitely held it back from reaching its full potential.
First Impressions
The initial chapters hooked me with the fish-out-of-water aspect and the potential for humor and cleverness arising from the barrage system. I was particularly interested in how the female lead (FL) would use this knowledge to her advantage and how it would impact her relationships. The setting of the 1970s also offered a nice change of pace from many modern web novels.
What Works Well
The slice-of-life elements, especially when the FL moves to the island with her military love interest (ML), are genuinely enjoyable. I found myself invested in her day-to-day life and the gradual development of her relationship. The smart couple dynamic is definitely present, and it's fun to see them navigate challenges together.
Areas of Concern
The barrage system itself feels underdeveloped. It's a fascinating concept, but the execution seems inconsistent. I was left wondering about the origins and rules of the system, and why it appeared sporadically. The lack of clear answers made it feel more like a plot device than an integral part of the story.
I also found the subplot involving the obsessive pursuer, Zheng Xiangdong, deeply unsettling. While I appreciate that the author aimed for drama, his behavior felt excessive and detracted from my enjoyment of the story. It felt like this character's arc was stretched out far too long, overshadowing other potentially more interesting developments.
