I was left wondering about the origins and rules of the system, and why it appeared sporadically. The lack of clear answers made it feel more like a plot device than an integral part of the story.
I also found the subplot involving the obsessive pursuer, Zheng Xiangdong, deeply unsettling. While I appreciate that the author aimed for drama, his behavior felt excessive and detracted from my enjoyment of the story.
