My Thoughts on Pastel Colours
"Pastel Colours" promised a sweet escape, and for the most part, it delivered. This BL novel blends comedy, romance, and slice-of-life elements into a heartwarming story centered around an artist, a businessman, and an adorable child. While some aspects didn't entirely resonate with me, the overall experience was enjoyable.
First Impressions
I was immediately drawn in by the premise: a caring protagonist, Song Ran, with a hidden depth, thrust into the life of a handsome CEO and his son. The initial chapters were filled with cute interactions and a budding connection that felt promising. The "home" vibe, as some readers described it, was definitely present, making me eager to see how the relationship would unfold.
What Works Well
The strongest aspect of "Pastel Colours" is its emotional core. Song Ran's character, despite his tragic backstory, is refreshingly optimistic and relatable. His journey of healing and self-discovery, aided by the mature and understanding ML, He Zhiyuan, is genuinely touching. I appreciated how the author tackled sensitive issues like past trauma and mental health, even if the resolution felt somewhat rushed.
The dynamic between Song Ran and He Zhiyuan is another highlight. Their conversations are often funny and heartwarming, and their relationship, while developing quickly, has moments of genuine sweetness. Plus, the addition of Bubu, the adorable child, adds another layer of warmth and complexity to the story. The smut scenes, while a point of contention for some, were well-written and added to the overall romantic feel for me.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the novel, I do have some reservations. The pacing, particularly in the latter half, felt rushed, and the insta-love trope was a bit too prominent. I also agree with some readers who felt that the author glossed over Song Ran's mental health issues, offering a somewhat unrealistic and simplified solution. The "daddy kink" element, while appealing to some, also felt a bit out of place and potentially problematic.

Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "Pastel Colours" is a worthwhile read for those seeking a fluffy, heartwarming BL novel with a touch of angst. The characters are endearing, the story is engaging, and the overall message is one of hope and healing. While it may not be a perfect masterpiece, it's a sweet and enjoyable escape that will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy inside. I give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
