My In-laws Are Obsessed With Me is a light and fluffy read that definitely scratches an itch for those of us who enjoy a good dose of romance with a touch of revenge. It's not going to win any awards for groundbreaking plot twists, but sometimes you just need something cute and heartwarming, and this novel largely delivers on that front.
First Impressions
Initially, I wasn't entirely sold on the premise. The title is a dead giveaway, and I was worried it would be overly cliché. However, I found myself quickly drawn into the story of Pereshati, our female lead, as she navigates her second chance at life. There's a certain charm to the characters and their interactions that kept me hooked.
What Works Well
One of the strongest aspects of this novel is the family dynamic. The Grand Duke Lapileon's family is truly endearing, and it's fun to watch them become completely smitten with Pereshati. I particularly enjoyed the character of Saoirse, the Duke's sister. She's a strong and complex character with a compelling backstory. The male lead, Therdeo, starts off as your typical cold duke, but thankfully, he softens up as the story progresses. I also appreciate that Pereshati isn't a pushover. She's intelligent, bold, and knows how to handle herself, especially when it comes to dealing with children. The revenge plot, while not the main focus, adds a nice little edge to the overall narrative.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the novel, there were a few things that held it back from being a complete home run. The plot can be a bit simplistic at times, and it does lean heavily into the "everyone adores the FL" trope, which can feel a bit much towards the end. I do also think that the conversations between the characters can feel a little off.
