"My Greengage" is a novel that promises a second chance at love, wrapped in a modern-day romance. It certainly took me on a rollercoaster of emotions, and while I appreciated certain aspects, I also found myself wrestling with some problematic elements.
First Impressions
Initially, the premise intrigued me. Reincarnation tropes often offer a compelling narrative, and the idea of a couple getting a second shot to right their wrongs is undeniably appealing. I was ready for a heartwarming story of redemption and growth.
What Works Well
The novel shines in its exploration of the male lead's personal growth in his second life. The side stories detailing his perspective on their past life were particularly impactful, illustrating the depth of his regret and his determination to be a better man. I found the concept of earning "good karma" and using a second chance to build a healthier relationship to be quite meaningful. The writing itself is competent, and there are moments where the story truly captivates, drawing you into the characters' emotional turmoil.
Areas of Concern
However, I can't ignore some of the darker themes present in the novel. The initial relationship between the main characters is fraught with manipulation and what some might consider one-sided affection, bordering on obsession. The male lead's actions in their first life leave a lot to be desired, and at times, I found it challenging to root for him, even with his subsequent growth. The female lead also makes some frustrating decisions that tested my patience.
