The premise is undeniably intriguing: a sickly disciple, Long Yu, is essentially betrothed to Xi Jing, a supposedly docile and clingy crybaby, for her health. Of course, there's far more to it than meets the eye. Immediately, I was drawn in by the promise of a doting, dragon love interest. And the "green tea" aspect? Pure curiosity bait!
What Works Well
The dynamic between Long Yu and Xi Jing is undeniably the highlight. Their interactions are genuinely cute, and I found myself smiling at Xi Jing's antics. The story's strength lies in its ability to deliver a heartwarming romance, despite its brevity. I also appreciated the underlying mystery of their past lives. The revelation that Xi Jing endured immense suffering to collect Long Yu's scattered soul fragments over ten lifetimes adds a layer of depth and poignancy to their relationship. The story definitely tugged at my heartstrings.
Areas of Concern
However, the novel's biggest weakness is its pacing. It's a short story crammed with a lot of xianxia tropes and world-building. The past life entanglements, while fascinating, take up a significant chunk of the narrative, leaving me wanting more development in the present. I felt like the emotional impact was lessened due to the rushed storytelling; a longer, more fleshed-out version could have been truly exceptional. Some elements, like the motives of certain side characters, felt a bit underdeveloped.
