I almost felt like I was missing something, or that the information dumps were somehow interrupting the flow of the story.

The protagonist's initial goals were something I appreciated. He's portrayed as a mature guy focused on his education, which is a refreshing change of pace. This felt like a solid foundation for character development and potentially interesting conflicts.
