I dove into this novel expecting a lighthearted romp with a demon lord MC and a cold love interest, and while it had its issues, I ultimately found it to be an enjoyable, though not perfect, read.
First Impressions
The initial chapters hooked me with the premise of a modern man transmigrating into a demon egg and growing up in a world of cultivation. Si Lan, the MC, is a refreshing character. He has a balanced outlook on life, maintaining a hint of his mortal past, which helps him navigate the immortal realm with a unique perspective. I appreciated his kindness and optimism, which set him apart from the typical aloof demon lord.
What Works Well
The main couple, Si Lan and the Heavenly Emperor, is undeniably cute. Their relationship develops naturally, without resorting to tired tropes like "Why is my heart beating so fast? Am I sick?". I found myself invested in their journey and enjoyed watching their bond deepen amidst the chaos of the six realms. The overarching plot, with its mini-arcs and underlying mysteries, kept me engaged. The concept of Heaven as a character, actively shaping the realms and punishing those it deems too powerful, added a fascinating layer to the story.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the main couple, the numerous side couples often felt forced and repetitive. Many of these relationships follow a tragic formula of regret, with characters "accidentally" hurting or killing their loved ones. While some might enjoy this angst, I found it tiresome after a while. Additionally, I felt that the initial transmigration aspect of the MC was essentially dropped, which seemed like a missed opportunity. Some plot points also felt unresolved, and the translation could be inconsistent at times, which detracted from the reading experience. I also agree with many readers about the focus being too much on side characters instead of the main characters.
