"Monster Boyfriend in a Horror Game" promised a blend of genres that really piqued my interest: fantasy, horror, romance, and yaoi. I dove in hoping for a thrilling adventure with a sweet love story woven in, and while it delivered on some fronts, it also stumbled in others.
First Impressions
The initial setup is intriguing. Earth's in a bad way, and people are being pulled into a horror game to gather resources. Our MC, Tan Xiao, gets a meteorite to the head (ouch!) and wakes up with amnesia, seemingly ahead of the other players. This sets the stage for a unique experience, and I was eager to see how his cluelessness would play out.
What Works Well
The early romance is undeniably sweet. It’s easy to get swept up in the budding relationship between Tan Xiao and Wen Yi. I found myself enjoying the fluff and lighthearted moments, almost forgetting that there's supposed to be a looming horror element. The translation is also well done, making for a smooth and easy reading experience, which is always a plus. I will say that the premise of the horror game itself is interesting.
Areas of Concern
While the romance is sweet, I felt like it overshadowed the plot at times. The horror aspects seemed to take a backseat, and the secondary characters felt underdeveloped, more like background props than actual contributors to the story. I also found the insta-love trope a bit jarring. Wen Yi's sudden 180 felt unearned and a little too convenient. The amnesia plot device also felt like a way to handwave certain plot points.
