Meng Po’s Husband Chasing Diary Review & Spoilers - Novel Translator
My Thoughts on Meng Po’s Husband Chasing Diary
This web novel, blending comedy, fantasy, and romance within a Chinese mythological framework, definitely grabbed my attention. I was eager to dive into the world of Meng Po and King Yan, especially with the promise of unique twists on familiar legends.
First Impressions
Initially, I was completely charmed! The author’s take on the classic characters is hilarious. Meng Po as a young, spirited woman, the perpetually lost Night God, and even the Ox-Head and Horse-Face duo as drug dealers – it's all so wonderfully bizarre. The beginning, focusing on Meng Po and King Yan's mortal experiences, is an absolute delight. It's a fun, lighthearted start that really pulls you in.
What Works Well
The humor is definitely a strong point. I found myself laughing out loud at the antics of the characters and the creative liberties taken with the source material. The translator also deserves immense praise. Their dedication to conveying the nuances of the original text, along with providing insightful background information, greatly enhances the reading experience. It's clear they have a deep understanding of the story and are passionate about bringing it to life for English-speaking audiences.
Areas of Concern
As the story progresses, things get a bit…complicated. I felt like the plot became increasingly convoluted with the addition of numerous subplots from other mythological stories. This led to a somewhat disjointed narrative, and the introduction of melodramatic elements felt jarring and out of place. The character development also seems to falter, particularly when it comes to the male lead.

Final Verdict
"Meng Po's Husband Chasing Diary" is a mixed bag. The first half is a genuinely enjoyable and humorous romp through Chinese mythology, elevated by excellent translation. However, the latter half suffers from a muddled plot and questionable character choices. If you're looking for a lighthearted fantasy with a unique premise and aren't too bothered by potential moral ambiguities, it might be worth checking out. Just be prepared for a shift in tone and complexity as the story unfolds.
