My Thoughts on Memoirs of the Returnee
"Memoirs of the Returnee" is quite the rollercoaster, a web novel that seems to divide readers right down the middle. Having delved into a good chunk of it, I can see why. It's a blend of action, comedy, drama, and a dash of everything else, set against a backdrop of academy life, magic, and revenge.
First Impressions
My initial reaction was a bit mixed. The beginning can feel a little clunky, as the story tries to establish the world and the protagonist, Shion. It's not the smoothest of starts, and some of the early character interactions felt a bit forced. However, I persisted, and I'm glad I did.
What Works Well
As the story progresses, the world-building becomes richer, and the characters start to develop more depth. Shion's "Notepad" ability, while a bit of a plot device, allows for creative problem-solving and provides a unique angle on the classic returnee trope. I appreciated the author's willingness to explore the complexities of revenge, moving beyond simple bloodshed and delving into manipulation and character growth. Some of the side characters also really start to shine, undergoing compelling transformations that add layers to the narrative. The blend of modern and fantasy elements creates an interesting and unique setting that I found myself drawn into.
Areas of Concern
The pacing can be inconsistent, with some sections feeling dense and others dragging on. The "Notepad" ability, while interesting, can sometimes feel like a convenient solution to every problem, and its limitations aren't always clearly defined. Also, the main character can come across as a pushover at times, which may frustrate some readers.

Final Verdict
"Memoirs of the Returnee" is a flawed but ultimately engaging web novel. While it has its share of pacing issues and occasional plot contrivances, the strong character development, unique setting, and creative use of the returnee trope make it worth a read. Just be prepared for a potentially bumpy ride and a divisive ending.
