Description

Despite his displeasure, he had to accept the imperial decree. He spent most of the month in the palace, and his impression of his new wife was that she was gentle, quiet, and did not cling to him. After they consummated their marriage, he found her to be delicate and diligent in managing the household. Despite her humble origins, he thought he could live with her peacefully until old age. However, during a banquet, he unintentionally discovered that she had a “white moonlight” (someone she cherished deeply) in her heart. Pei Muheng, who always prided himself on being decisive and emotionless, found himself tossing and turning at night, experiencing the pain of unrequited love for the first time.

First Impressions
My first impression was one of intrigue. The idea of a calm, clever protagonist, especially one who was adopted, felt fresh and offered a lot of potential for interesting character dynamics. I was ready to see how the story would unfold and how the relationship between the leads would develop.
What Works Well
What I appreciated most about "Meeting You" was the initial portrayal of the female lead. Her rationality and logical approach to life, especially given her circumstances, were quite compelling. It was refreshing to see a character who wasn't immediately swayed by emotions, and her independence felt like a unique take on the historical romance genre. I also found the male lead to be a decent character, even though some of the reviews implied that he faded into the background at times.
Areas of Concern
However, as I continued reading, I began to understand some of the criticisms leveled against the novel, particularly concerning the female lead's character development. While her initial stoicism was intriguing, it seemed to devolve into an almost robotic indifference. There was a sense that she remained emotionally detached throughout the story, even as the male lead made significant sacrifices for her. This lack of emotional reciprocation made it difficult to fully invest in their relationship.
Another area of concern was the focus on the female lead's father. While his backstory was undoubtedly tragic, it seemed to overshadow the development of the main characters, pulling the narrative in an unexpected direction.
