"Martial Arts Reigns" is a web novel that's been on my radar for a while, especially since its manhua adaptation has garnered quite a following. Diving in, I found a story brimming with familiar xuanhuan tropes, but also one with its own unique charm and frustrating shortcomings.
First Impressions
The initial chapters definitely threw me for a loop. The protagonist's early decisions felt questionable, and I found myself disagreeing with his leniency towards certain characters. I almost rage-quit, but I pressed on.
What Works Well
I'm glad I did, because the story does improve significantly. The protagonist's development is a major highlight. He evolves from a somewhat naive character into someone more capable and, dare I say, likeable. The romance, when it takes center stage, is genuinely sweet. I found myself enjoying the rom-com moments, particularly in the early stages of the relationship, which provided a welcome contrast to the often brutal world. The classic xianxia elements are also well-executed, with the female lead having a powerful background and the MC needing to catch up to her level.

However, my patience was tested at times. The protagonist's kindness occasionally felt out of place, leading to frustrating betrayals. There were moments where his wisdom seemed to vanish, and his actions contradicted his supposed training by assassin gods. I can see why some readers might find his naivete irritating, especially when it puts his loved ones at risk. This inconsistency in character portrayal is a significant flaw.
