This novel presented a unique take on the historical romance genre, and I found myself quite invested in the female lead's journey. While it wasn't without its flaws, the strengths of "Madam, She Has A Tender Heart" definitely outweighed the weaknesses for me.
First Impressions
Initially, I went in expecting a typical historical romance with a damsel in distress. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find a strong, independent female lead who prioritizes her family, financial security, and personal freedom above all else. The arranged marriage setup is present, but it serves more as a catalyst for her growth rather than the central conflict.
What Works Well
One of the most compelling aspects of this novel is the FL's business acumen and resourcefulness. She's a modern woman in ancient China, but she doesn't flaunt it. Instead, she uses her knowledge strategically to build a successful life for herself and her loved ones. I appreciated that her success wasn't attributed to some magical charm or instant love from powerful figures, but rather to her intelligence, hard work, and ability to build strong relationships. The slice-of-life elements are also well-executed, offering a glimpse into the daily struggles and triumphs of the characters. The author does a good job of tying up loose ends with side characters, which I always appreciate. The male lead is also a plus, being a pure-hearted and slightly goofy character, a refreshing change from the usual stoic ML.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the novel overall, there were a few areas that could have been improved. The political intrigue, while necessary for the plot, occasionally felt tedious and detracted from the more engaging aspects of the story. The "system" the FL possesses is barely used, and felt like an unnecessary addition. Also, the FL is very much the focus of the story, and other characters are not as fleshed out.

Despite its flaws, "Madam, She Has A Tender Heart" is a worthwhile read for those seeking a historical novel with a strong female lead, a focus on family and business, and a refreshing take on the romance genre. While the romance is a subplot, the FL's journey of self-discovery and empowerment is ultimately the heart of the story. I'd give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars.
