A strong-willed merchant woman, disillusioned with marriage, decides to have a child on her own terms – it's a bold concept that certainly sets the stage for a unique historical romance. I dove in expecting a story that challenged societal norms and explored the complexities of love and independence in ancient China.
What Works Well
What I found most compelling was the flawed nature of the main characters. Neither the female lead (FL) nor the male lead (ML) are paragons of virtue, and I appreciated that. The FL is headstrong and unapologetically ambitious, defying the expectations placed upon women of her time. Meanwhile, the ML starts as a rather typical patriarchal figure, but undergoes significant character growth throughout the story. Seeing him challenged and evolve was a rewarding aspect of the novel.
The strong family dynamics also stood out. The FL's family is fiercely loyal and supportive, rallying around her even when her choices threaten their social standing. These moments of familial solidarity added depth and heart to the narrative. Plus, the baby cub is absolutely adorable, and his presence brings a wholesome touch to the story.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the overall story, I did find some elements less compelling. The introduction of a "villainess" felt somewhat cliché and unnecessary. I also felt bad for the young lady who was obsessed with the ML, she was a pitiful character. I can see how her actions were essential to the plot, but her fate struck me as unfair.
