"Love In Vain" is certainly a complex and potentially divisive read, wading into some very dark territory. I went in expecting a heavy drama, and it definitely delivered on that front, though perhaps not always in the ways I anticipated. The novel explores themes of love, obsession, and trauma within a tangled web of family secrets.
First Impressions
Initially, I found myself struggling to connect with Lan Hupo, the initial POV character. Her passivity, while understandable given her circumstances, made it difficult to fully invest in her journey. It felt like I was watching events unfold from a distance, rather than being drawn into her emotional world.
What Works Well
The shifting perspective to Ke Beichen, the male lead, is where the story truly found its footing for me. He's a multifaceted character, displaying a cold, controlling demeanor towards his lover, yet also showcasing filial piety and deep affection for his daughter. This complexity made him far more compelling than Lan Hupo, and the contrast between his different relationships added layers to the narrative.
His relationship with his daughter, Lan Beibei, was a definite highlight. These interactions brought a much-needed lightness to the otherwise bleak storyline. Watching this stoic CEO transform into a doting father was surprisingly heartwarming and provided a welcome respite from the heavier themes. I found myself genuinely invested in their bond and appreciated how Lan Beibei's presence revealed a softer, more human side to Ke Beichen.
Areas of Concern
The initial chapters, told solely from Lan Hupo's perspective, felt somewhat misleading. It created a specific impression of Ke Beichen that later proved to be incomplete. This narrative choice, while potentially intentional, did hinder my initial engagement with the story. The morally gray areas explored, particularly the incestuous undertones, may also be a sticking point for some readers.
