My Thoughts on King of Gods
"King of Gods" is a web novel I dove into with a mix of curiosity and trepidation, given its mixed reception. It definitely has some strong points, but also some glaring weaknesses that kept me from fully enjoying the experience.
First Impressions
Initially, the story felt like a familiar xuanhuan trope: an underdog MC, Zhao Feng, gets a lucky break with a mysterious eye (reminiscent of Sharingan/Byakugan from Naruto, many have noted), and suddenly his potential skyrockets. While this isn't inherently bad, the early chapters felt a bit generic, with the MC facing predictable challenges and arrogant antagonists who seemingly exist solely to be humiliated. I can see why some dropped it early, feeling it offered nothing new.
What Works Well
Despite the initial clichés, I can appreciate some of the world-building. I liked how the author systematically introduced new cultivation levels and expanded the world from a small village to continents. The power system, while straightforward, was easy to understand. Also, several readers mentioned that the story picks up after the initial chapters, with more interesting twists and turns. I also appreciated the fast-paced nature of the story, which makes it easy to shut your brain off and enjoy the ride.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, "King of Gods" suffers from some significant issues. Several readers, and myself included, found the MC's character to be inconsistent and, at times, devoid of emotion. His supposed genius is often contradicted by him being easily overwhelmed in new environments. Some find the writing repetitive, with the same descriptions and phrases used constantly. The fights can be underwhelming, with skill names thrown around without much explanation of what they actually do.

Final Verdict
"King of Gods" is a mixed bag. It's a decent time-killer if you're looking for a power fantasy with a fast-paced plot. However, the generic start, inconsistent characterization, and weak romance prevent it from reaching its full potential. I would recommend it with reservations, primarily to those new to the xuanhuan genre or those who don't mind overlooking its flaws for some mindless entertainment.
