Description
Jiang Yaoyao is the daughter of the magistrate of Yangzhou County. She loves to laugh by nature. When she laughs, the two dimples on her cheeks are faintly visible, which can sweeten people’s hearts. When she was fourteen years old, a handsome and tall man suddenly came to her house. She looked over curiously and met the man’s deep and dark eyes. She was stunned and called out s*upidly, “Hello, uncle, my name is Yaoyao!” Hearing her greeting, the cold and noble man suddenly pursed his lips and smiled, and in an instant, it was like a hundred flowers blooming, and his voice was mellow and hoarse, “Qin Huaijin.” Jiang Yaoyao thought Qin Huaijin was a very difficult person to approach, but she didn’t expect that the man treated her very well. He would teach her to ride a horse and shoot arrows, and play some childish games with her. When she was fifteen years old and came of age, she was a little sad, because she had been engaged and would be married soon. But she didn’t expect that one month before the wedding, she ran into her husband-to-be having a tryst with a pregnant woman with a bulging belly. She was shocked and lost her color. When she was hesitant and aggrieved, the rain poured down. She saw a tall figure holding an umbrella and walking towards her. The handsome man with a dignified temperament stretched out his hand to her with a gentle look in his eyes. “Don’t be afraid, Yaoyao, I’m here.” Jiang Yaoyao finally couldn’t restrain herself. She held the man’s broad and warm hand and stumbled into his arms. Like a young animal that finally found its support, she sobbed softly, “Uncle…” Male protagonist: Qin Ye, whose name is Huai Jin, was the emperor of the Great Zhou Dynasty. He was originally the ninth son of the emperor. He was brave and good at fighting and had been stationed at the border. Once the palace changed, he suppressed the princes with his iron-blooded wrist and seized the throne! After ascending the throne, in order to recuperate, he went to the water town in the south of the Yangtze River. The first time he saw Jiang Yaoyao was on a pleasure boat. The girl’s bright smile was like a beam of light that shone into his long-silent heart. From then on, he took her under his wings, loved her, protected her, and cherished her.

My Thoughts on Imperial Favor
"Imperial Favor" promised a light historical romance, and while it delivered on some aspects, my experience was a mixed bag. It's a novel that requires a certain… tolerance, let's say, for certain character archetypes and plot devices.
First Impressions
Initially, I was intrigued by the premise of a carefree protagonist in ancient China. The tags like "doting love interests" and "cute protagonist" painted a picture of a fluffy, enjoyable read. However, it quickly became apparent that the "cute" aspect might be a bit too prominent for my taste.
What Works Well
The novel certainly excels at creating a doting atmosphere. The male lead's devotion to the female lead is undeniable, and for readers who enjoy that dynamic, it's likely a major draw. The story also doesn't take itself too seriously, which can be refreshing. It aims for lightheartedness, and in some moments, it achieves that. There are instances where the interactions between characters are genuinely sweet, providing a momentary sugar rush of entertainment.
Areas of Concern
My primary issue lies with the female lead's characterization. While intended to be endearing, her childish behavior often veered into the realm of irritating. It felt like her naivete was exaggerated to the point of being unrealistic, even considering the historical context. The plot, at times, felt secondary to the constant doting, and I found myself wishing for more substantial conflicts and character development. I also found the relationship dynamic to be a bit unsettling, especially because the FL never really matures.

Final Verdict
"Imperial Favor" is a novel that will likely appeal to a specific audience. If you enjoy extremely sweet, lighthearted stories with a heavy emphasis on doting relationships and don't mind a protagonist who acts younger than her age, you might find it enjoyable. However, if you prefer more mature characters, complex plots, and nuanced relationships, this might not be the novel for you. For me, it was a 2.5/5 - entertaining in moments, but ultimately too frustrating to fully embrace.
