This title alone is a mouthful, and honestly, the story lives up to that level of complexity – not always in a good way. "I’m Supposed to Be Hated..." throws you into a world of misunderstandings, hidden identities, and a protagonist who suddenly finds himself popular after a makeover. It's a bumpy ride, and while there are moments that shine, it's definitely not a perfect novel.
First Impressions
The premise is intriguing, I'll give it that. A protagonist who's initially disliked by several key female characters suddenly becomes the object of their affection after changing his appearance? It screams potential for comedic gold and maybe even some thoughtful commentary on superficiality. However, the initial chapters left me feeling a bit uneasy.
What Works Well
The core concept of calling out the girls on their hypocrisy is probably the strongest point. This isn't a pushover MC who just accepts the sudden shift in their attitudes. He actually confronts them, questioning their motives and pointing out their past behavior. It's refreshing to see a protagonist who acknowledges the unfairness of the situation and isn't afraid to voice his frustrations.
Areas of Concern
The execution, however, is where things get a little shaky. The characters themselves can be difficult to root for. The step-sister, childhood friend, and gyaru all start off with pretty unlikeable traits, and their "reasons" for disliking the MC initially often feel flimsy or downright mean. Also, the martial arts element feels underutilized. It's introduced early on as a defining characteristic of the MC, but then it fades into the background, which is a shame.

"I’m Supposed to Be Hated..." is a mixed bag. The premise is interesting, and the MC's eventual confrontation with the girls is a definite highlight. However, the unlikeable initial behavior of the female characters and the underutilization of certain plot elements hold it back. It has potential, but it needs more development and nuance to truly shine.
