Description
Reincarnated Chu Qing never wanted to become a superstar. He had only two simple wishes in life: To marry an ordinary wife who truly loves him and live a stable, peaceful life. To quietly amass wealth. Unfortunately, both of these dreams were destined to be shattered. Fame as a celebrated writer, poet, king of pop, multiple-time movie and television emperor, and box office legend was inexplicably thrust upon him, completely destroying his plans. “What? My Thoughts on I’m Not a Superstar
"I'm Not a Superstar" is a web novel that throws a naive protagonist into the chaotic world of showbiz, and my experience reading it was...complicated. It's a story that elicits strong reactions, both positive and negative, and I found myself caught between moments of genuine amusement and utter frustration.
First Impressions
The initial chapters definitely grabbed my attention with the premise of an ordinary guy being unwillingly thrust into the spotlight. The comedy tag is certainly appropriate, as the early parts rely heavily on over-the-top situations and character interactions. However, this is also where some of the biggest issues arose for me.
What Works Well
When the comedic elements land, they really land. There are moments of genuine hilarity as the protagonist navigates the absurdities of the entertainment industry. I also appreciate the slice-of-life aspects; seeing him slowly adapt and find his footing, even reluctantly, is enjoyable. Later in the novel, I found the "depression arc" to be a surprisingly well-handled exploration of the mental toll that fame and constant pressure can take on an individual. The author deserves credit for tackling such a sensitive topic with some nuance.
Areas of Concern
My biggest problem lies with the initial treatment of the main character. The constant bullying and manipulation he endures from other characters, especially early on, felt less like comedic exaggeration and more like a relentless assault on his agency. I found it difficult to root for a protagonist who seemed to lack any real backbone or self-respect. The romantic subplot also felt somewhat forced, particularly the Stockholm syndrome aspects, and the motivations of some of the female characters were often baffling and frustrating. The inconsistency with character names and plot points also pulled me out of the story.

Final Verdict
"I'm Not a Superstar" is a novel with potential, but its execution is uneven. While the comedic elements and later character development offer some redemption, the early chapters and problematic character dynamics left a sour taste in my mouth. If you're willing to power through the initial frustrations, you might find something to enjoy, but be prepared for a bumpy ride.
