My Thoughts on I Returned as a God
First Impressions
Okay, so I jumped into "I Returned as a God" with a healthy dose of skepticism, given the familiar premise. We've all seen the overpowered protagonist, the betrayal by higher powers, and the sudden appearance of dungeons in our world. It felt like I was bracing myself for another run-of-the-mill power fantasy. The initial chapters did little to dissuade that feeling, as the MC's journey from fantasy world savior to hunter felt a little rushed.
What Works Well
Despite my initial reservations, there's an undeniable hook to this story. Even with the familiar elements, the way the author weaves them together creates a compelling mystery. I found myself genuinely wanting to know why things are happening the way they are. The action sequences are well-paced and engaging, and the protagonist's godly powers, even if vaguely defined, add an interesting dynamic to the standard hunter fare. I think the translation is well done, so it's an easy read.
Areas of Concern
My biggest issue, and I suspect I'm not alone here, is the lack of concrete explanation surrounding the MC's powers and his transformation into a god. The story hints at great power but doesn't fully explain how he achieved it or the extent of his abilities. This vagueness can be frustrating, making it difficult to fully invest in his journey. I sometimes felt like I was missing crucial pieces of information, constantly double-checking previous chapters to see if I'd missed something. Also, the world-building could be a bit more fleshed out.
Final Verdict
"I Returned as a God" is a mixed bag. It's got the familiar trappings of the genre, but with a spark of something more. While the lack of clear explanations can be frustrating, the core mystery and engaging action kept me reading. If you're in the mood for a revenge-fueled action story with a powerful protagonist navigating dungeons and dealing with the consequences of godly power, this might just scratch that itch. I'm giving it a tentative 3.5 out of 5. It has potential, but needs to address its world-building issues.
