My Thoughts on Hunger Academy
"Hunger Academy" promised a wild ride, and after diving in, I can confirm it delivers... mostly. With its blend of action, adventure, fantasy, horror, and even a dash of sci-fi, it’s certainly not afraid to throw everything at the wall and see what sticks. And surprisingly, a lot of it does.
First Impressions
The premise is intriguing: a Hunger Games-esque scenario with a country-vs-country twist, set within a series of increasingly bizarre and dangerous worlds. Think escape room meets world-hopping, all with a live-streaming overlay. It's a chaotic mix, but the initial chapters hooked me with their sheer audacity.
What Works Well
I found myself genuinely enjoying the MC's rebellious streak. He's an overpowered character, no doubt about it, but he uses his abilities to exploit the rules and push boundaries, which I found entertaining. The various scenarios felt imaginative and well-developed, each one almost capable of standing alone as its own story. The later arcs build towards a greater plot, providing a satisfying sense of progression. I also appreciated the unique dynamic between the MC and the ML, even though the romance is extremely subtle. The focus is more on their mental understanding of each other, which is an interesting change of pace.
Areas of Concern
While the novel has its strengths, there are a few things that held it back for me. The nationalism, while perhaps expected given the premise, can feel a bit heavy-handed at times. I did find myself skimming through some of those sections. Also, those looking for a romance-heavy story might be disappointed. The relationship between the MC and ML is more of a slow burn, if you can even call it that.

Overall, "Hunger Academy" is a flawed but ultimately enjoyable read. If you're a fan of overpowered protagonists, intricate world-building, and don't mind a healthy dose of action with minimal romance, then this might be right up your alley. Just be prepared to skim past some of the nationalistic elements and don't expect a deep, emotional love story. I'd give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars.
