Description
Having an outstanding tutor was the bare minimum of a good teaching environment. This was the fundamental reason behind Di Lin choosing Saint Padeus’ Magic Institution. But only after entering the school did he realise— His imagination was too perfect, while reality was too disastrous. Friends were scarce, and the tutor was difficult to deal with. The saying Di Lin passed down to later generations: “My glorious times… started from remaining silent.”

My Thoughts on Holy Institution
"Holy Institution" promised a blend of magic, school life, and slow-burn romance, and after diving in, I have a mixed bag of thoughts. It's a unique novel, but it might not be for everyone.
First Impressions
Jumping into this world, I was immediately hit with a lot of information. The initial chapters are heavy on world-building, introducing numerous countries, noble names, and political tensions. While some appreciate this thorough setup, I can see how others might find it overwhelming. It definitely requires patience to navigate the initial info-dump and get truly invested in the characters and plot.
What Works Well
Once past the initial hurdle, the story finds its footing. The calm and hardworking protagonist, Di Lin, is easy to root for as he navigates the challenges of St. Padeus' Magic Institution. His relationship with Hydin, his powerful but sharp-tongued tutor, is a definite highlight. The slow-burn romance between them is satisfying, built on mutual respect and challenge. I enjoyed the detailed descriptions of magic and the unique magic system, which felt like a fresh take on the genre. The political backdrop adds depth, even though the story remains relatively focused on Di Lin's personal journey and magical growth. I also appreciated the western fantasy writing style.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed many aspects of "Holy Institution," I can't ignore some of the criticisms. The pacing is undeniably slow, and the romance is subtle to the point where it might feel almost non-existent to some readers until very late in the story. The ending, while providing a decent transition point, definitely leaves you hanging, as it's clear this is just the first book in a larger series. Also, some readers may find it difficult to connect emotionally with the characters, finding them somewhat bland or lacking in depth.

Final Verdict
Overall, I'd give "Holy Institution" a solid 4 out of 5 stars. It's a well-written fantasy novel with a unique setting, interesting characters, and a satisfying slow-burn romance. However, its slow pacing, heavy world-building, and subtle romance might not appeal to all readers. If you enjoy detailed world-building, calm protagonists, and a focus on magical development with subtle romance, this might be right up your alley. Just be prepared for a cliffhanger ending and the need to invest in the rest of the series!
