My Thoughts on Hi, I’m the Hero’s Father ~I’m Sorry For All The Trouble My Foolish Son Has Caused You~
This title certainly grabbed my attention! "Hi, I’m the Hero’s Father ~I’m Sorry For All The Trouble My Foolish Son Has Caused You~" promises a unique spin on the chosen one trope, and I dove in with a healthy dose of curiosity. The premise is simple: What happens when the hero goes off the rails, and his parents have to clean up the mess? It’s a scenario ripe for both comedic and dramatic potential, and the early chapters definitely hint at both.
First Impressions
Initially, I was intrigued by the world and the setup. The idea of a father stepping up to take responsibility for his son's actions, especially when that son is a powerful hero, is a fresh take. The world feels like a fairly standard fantasy setting, but the focus on family dynamics offers a different lens through which to view it.
What Works Well
I appreciate the concept of parents actively trying to correct their child's mistakes, especially when that child wields significant power. It's a refreshing change from the typical deadbeat or absent parent trope often found in fantasy stories. The exploration of how a hero's power can corrupt them, and the consequences of that corruption, is also compelling. I found the story interesting enough to keep me reading, though I can see why some might find the pacing a bit slow.
Areas of Concern
The portrayal of the father-son relationship is a bit of a sticking point for me. While the story attempts to justify the father's actions as a form of "re-education," I found myself uncomfortable with the implications of domestic violence. It's a delicate subject, and the story doesn't always handle it with the nuance it requires. This aspect could definitely be a turn-off for some readers. I also felt that the initial abandonment of the son, even with the explanation of societal norms, was difficult to fully reconcile with the father's later attempts at redemption.
Final Verdict
"Hi, I’m the Hero’s Father" has a compelling premise and some genuinely interesting ideas. The focus on family responsibility in a fantasy setting is a welcome change. However, the questionable portrayal of the father-son relationship and the use of violence as a corrective measure are significant drawbacks. If you can look past these issues, you might find something to enjoy, but proceed with caution. Overall, I'd say it's a mixed bag with potential, but definitely not for everyone.
