Description
Five years ago, the Chen parents packaged Chen Luoru’s elder sister, Chen Yang, into a glamorous socialite and tried to sell her off to the Meng family’s heir, Meng Jianchen, who was studying in the U.S. at the time. On the eve of the wedding, Chen Yang was found to be pregnant—but the child wasn’t his. To avoid a massive scandal, the Chen parents bombarded Chen Luoru with desperate calls, forcing her to return to China and take her sister’s place. Chen Luoru: “I still have to go to college! Why would I get married?” Chen Parents: “Meng Jianchen has already agreed to this marriage.” Chen Luoru: “Is he a devil or something?” — 1. After four years of marriage, Chen Luoru and Meng Jianchen are practically strangers, barely seeing each other. One night, she walks out of a glitzy London bar with a male friend—only to spot a tall, elegant man standing by a Rolls-Royce Phantom. Meng Jianchen holds a long umbrella, a wedding ring glinting on the ring finger of his left hand. Raindrops slide off the umbrella’s edge as he presses his lips together, eyes unreadable and deep. Chen Luoru hears him speak slowly: “Had enough fun, Mrs. Meng?” — 2. For the Nth time, Chen Luoru asks Meng Jianchen for a divorce—but this damned man is like fireproof steel: can’t be steamed, boiled, hammered, or fried. Fuming, she storms into a luxury boutique and goes on a wild shopping spree—using his credit card. Uncharacteristically, Meng Jianchen follows her in: “Stop making a scene. Come home.” Chen Luoru coos: “Can’t you even sweet-talk me a little?” Meng Jianchen wraps his arm around her waist and softly says: “Be good. Don’t be mad. Come home with me, hmm?” Chen Luoru flips faster than a page in a book: “Brother-in-law, don’t be like this—my sister is still waiting for you at home!” All eyes in the store instantly snap toward Meng Jianchen.

My Thoughts on He’s not Gentle
"He's not Gentle" promised a lighthearted romance with a comedic undertone, and while it delivered on some fronts, it left me with mixed feelings overall. It wasn't a terrible read, but it certainly wasn't groundbreaking.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the "arranged marriage" trope and the promise of "cute story" elements. The premise of a young woman entering into a marriage contract certainly had potential for some fun, lighthearted drama and character growth. I was hoping for a story that would be both entertaining and perhaps a little bit thought-provoking.
What Works Well
One of the strongest aspects of the novel is the female lead's character development, albeit slight. She starts as quite spoiled, sheltered, and naive, but we see her slowly learn and grow as she navigates the complexities of her new life. This gradual evolution was a definite plus and kept me somewhat invested in her journey. The comedic undertones were also a welcome addition, providing moments of levity that kept the story from becoming too heavy or melodramatic. The focus on couple growth was also nice, it was fun to watch them get to know each other.
Areas of Concern
However, the story does rely on some pretty tired tropes that I found a bit disappointing. The family dynamics, particularly the emphasis on marriage as the ultimate goal for women and the implied preference for sons, felt rather dated and frustrating. It's hard to fully enjoy a story when these elements are so prevalent. I also struggled with the female lead's unquestioning loyalty to her family, which at times felt more like manipulation than genuine affection. The family's reasoning behind the marriage also felt a bit shallow and unconvincing.
Final Verdict
"He's not Gentle" is an okay read if you're looking for something undemanding and easy to get through. It has its moments of charm and a bit of character development, but it's also weighed down by predictable tropes and some questionable family dynamics. Ultimately, I'd say it's a decent way to pass the time, but don't expect anything too profound or innovative. I'd give it a solid 3 out of 5 stars.
