After spending all his starting skill points, all he had to show for it was an immobile junk robot and two thick engineering textbooks in English he’d never read. Infuriated, Kanji uploaded the entire textbook data to forums, an act that triggered misunderstandings about him. Oblivious to HAO’s true nature, Kanji keeps unintentionally reinforcing others’ mistaken assumptions about him. This title is quite a mouthful, isn't it? But does the story live up to the hype of a VRMMO where you can build giant robots? Well, after diving in, I've got some thoughts.
First Impressions
The premise is undeniably cool. A high-quality VR game intertwined with a futuristic setting, mechs, and a protagonist focused on production – it's a recipe that piqued my interest immediately. The initial chapters do a decent job of throwing you into the action, and I found myself intrigued by the world-building.
What Works Well
What I found most enjoyable was the proactive nature of the main character. He has clear goals, and he actively pursues them. The author avoids making him overpowered. The enemies aren't pushovers, and he has to work hard to protect those he cares about as the stakes rise. This created a compelling sense of progression. The mechs themselves are a definite highlight. The author takes a grounded approach, which provides a nice contrast to the enemy forces.
Areas of Concern
The biggest issue I had was the density of the protagonist. It can be frustrating to watch him bumble through situations, oblivious to obvious cues, especially romantic ones. This dense protagonist trait felt overdone at times. I also struggled with the overall plot coherence. The inclusion of elements like time travel, while potentially interesting, felt somewhat messy and could have been better integrated.
