My Thoughts on Happy Divorce
"Happy Divorce" certainly lived up to its name... in the sense that reading it made me want to file for one from the story itself. This novel, while short, was a rollercoaster of emotions, and not always the good kind. It's a story of second chances, regret, and the complexities of love and hate, but the execution left me wanting.
First Impressions
The premise, a divorced couple navigating the aftermath of a strained marriage in ancient China, intrigued me. I was ready for some angst, maybe some business intrigue, and hopefully, a satisfying redemption arc. The "arranged marriage" and "business management" tags also piqued my interest, promising a blend of personal drama and strategic maneuvering.
What Works Well
I have to give credit where it's due: the translation was fantastic. It truly brought the story to life, capturing the nuances of the characters' emotions and the setting's atmosphere. Without a skilled translator, I suspect this would have been an even rougher read. Also, if you like the 'shitty ML gets redemption' trope, you might find something to enjoy here. The novel does deliver on that front, albeit with some caveats.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, my enjoyment stopped there. The characters themselves felt underdeveloped and frustrating. The female lead, despite being lauded for her business acumen, came across as weak and easily manipulated, especially by the male lead. Her supposed "calm protagonist" tag felt wildly inaccurate, as she often succumbed to emotional outbursts and poor decisions.
The male lead was even more problematic. His attempts at repentance felt hollow, especially considering his past behavior. He constantly belittled and emotionally neglected the female lead during their marriage. His actions often contradicted his supposed remorse. The fact that he resorts to manipulation and pressure tactics even after supposedly changing his ways is deeply concerning.
Furthermore, the plot felt riddled with inconsistencies. The male lead's father's backstory felt retconned to make him more sympathetic. Also, the female characters were often villainized without proper justification. This created a frustrating imbalance and left me with a sour taste. The lack of meaningful consequences for the male lead's actions, beyond some mild family drama, felt deeply unsatisfying.

Final Verdict
Ultimately, "Happy Divorce" is a difficult recommendation. While the translation is excellent and the premise has potential, the execution falls short. The problematic characters, inconsistent plot, and lack of satisfying resolution left me feeling disappointed and unsatisfied. If you're a die-hard fan of redemption arcs with deeply flawed characters, you might find something to enjoy here. However, if you're looking for a story with strong, independent leads and a well-developed plot, you're better off looking elsewhere. I give it a 2 out of 5.
