My Thoughts on Great Artist
"Great Artist" is a web novel that piqued my interest with its premise of reincarnation, art, and a slice-of-life setting in Hollywood. While it has its charms, I found myself ultimately conflicted about my overall experience.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the idea of a protagonist navigating the entertainment industry with a second chance at life. The early chapters promised a lighthearted and somewhat realistic take on reincarnation, focusing on family interactions and budding friendships. This was a welcome change from the often-overused "Gary Stu" tropes.
What Works Well
The family dynamics are a definite highlight. I particularly enjoyed the genuine interactions between the protagonist, his mother, and his brother. The portrayal of his friendship with Hathaway also felt authentic and added a layer of warmth to the story. I also appreciated that the protagonist's journey wasn't depicted as effortless success. It seemed to lean more into the emotional side of pursuing one's passions, which I found refreshing. The slow, anticipatory build-up kept me engaged and eager to see what would happen next.
Areas of Concern
However, there were some aspects that detracted from my enjoyment. One issue that kept cropping up for me was the protagonist's internal monologues using his Chinese name. Given that he's living in the US, it felt jarring and took me out of the story. I also found myself wanting more detail about the financial aspects of his artistic pursuits. The lack of information about his earnings made it difficult to fully grasp the reality of his situation. Finally, the harem aspect of the romance felt forced and unnecessary. I would have preferred a deeper exploration of a single relationship rather than a superficial juggling of multiple love interests.

Final Verdict
"Great Artist" has moments of brilliance, particularly in its portrayal of family and friendships. However, the jarring use of the protagonist's Chinese name in internal monologues, the lack of financial detail, and the harem romance ultimately held it back from reaching its full potential. While I enjoyed certain aspects, I can't wholeheartedly recommend it without reservation. It's a mixed bag with both strengths and weaknesses that will likely appeal to some readers more than others.
