My Thoughts on God of Thunder

"God of Thunder" is a web novel that I found to be a mixed bag, full of potential but also some frustrating shortcomings. It's a completed story in its original language, but the ongoing translation has given me a glimpse into both its strengths and weaknesses.

The initial hook is quite appealing. I enjoyed the early focus on a tribal society and the protagonist's use of his past-life knowledge. The "weak to strong" progression is always a classic, and the family dynamic, especially the relationship with the grandfather, was heartwarming. It definitely scratched that itch for a fun, adventure-filled read.

What Works Well

I appreciated the power system and the unique feel of the world, especially in the beginning. The protagonist, Lei Xinfeng, is generally a cool and calm character, someone who thinks before acting, which is a refreshing change from some of the more hot-headed protagonists in this genre. The author also subverts some common tropes, avoiding the endless cycle of arrogant young masters and vengeful massacres, which I found to be a major plus.

I also noticed a lack of consistency in the world-building. The power levels and ranking systems seem to shift without much explanation, leading to confusion. The ending, from what I've gathered, seems to be a letdown for many, with the MC's ultimate fate feeling anticlimactic after all the build-up.

Finally, there's a recurring issue with the portrayal of female characters. Some readers have pointed out that they often feel sidelined or are written in a way that reinforces sexist tropes.

Final Verdict

Despite its flaws, "God of Thunder" offers an enjoyable ride for those who enjoy a focus on action, adventure, and a fast-paced cultivation journey. However, the uneven pacing, forgotten plot threads, and weak character development prevent it from reaching its full potential.
